How to Slow Down a Song to Learn It on Guitar

You found a fast lick, a chord change, or a solo you can't get your hands around at full speed, and someone told you to "just slow it down." Good advice — but the details matter more than the advice itself. Slow it down the wrong way and the song drops into a weird, muddy key. Slow it down the right way but never build back up, and you're stuck being able to play a song only in slow motion.

Here's the actual method: what slowing a song down does to the sound, how far to slow it, how to bring the tempo back up without falling apart, and where the legal line is if the song you're learning from lives on YouTube.

The pitch problem, and how it's solved

Think about a cassette tape or a vinyl record. Play it back slower than it was recorded, and everything gets lower — the singer sounds like a different person, the guitar sounds like it's tuned down. That's not a glitch; it's physics. Slower playback means the sound wave vibrates fewer times per second, and fewer vibrations per second is what a lower pitch is. Old-school "slow it down" tricks (half-speed tape decks, some cheap apps) still work exactly this way, and the pitch drop is the trade-off.

Software made for practicing does something smarter. Instead of just stretching the recording out, it re-times the sound while keeping the vibration rate the same — so the tempo slows down but the pitch stays where it was. That's the feature to look for, usually labeled something like "preserve pitch," "keep key," or just built in as the default. Any tool built for musicians (as opposed to a generic video speed slider) should already do this for you; you shouldn't have to think about it beyond checking it's turned on.

One thing this doesn't fix: extreme slow-downs (under roughly 40-50% of normal speed) start to sound a little smeared or robotic no matter how good the software is. That's a real limit of the technology, not a setting you're missing.

If the song lives on YouTube, you don't even need a separate app for this part: YouTube's own built-in speed control (the gear icon on the player) already preserves pitch the same way — it's not just a raw slow-motion effect (How-To Geek). What YouTube's native control doesn't give you is a way to loop just a few bars without manually dragging the scrubber back — that part is where a dedicated practice tool earns its keep, which is what the next section is about.

Which tool should you use?

Every option here does the same basic job — slow audio down without dropping the pitch — but they're built for different situations. Match the tool to what you're actually working from:

Just playing along with a YouTube video, nothing installed: YouTube's own speed control, covered above. Free, and already pitch-preserving. The trade-off is no looping and only four fixed speed steps.

Slowing down a file you already own — a backing track, a lesson recording, an MP3: a dedicated slow-down app loaded with the file directly can set a tighter, more precise loop than a video player and give you finer speed steps than four presets. Amazing Slow Downer by Roni Music is a longtime standard here — desktop apps for Windows and Mac plus iOS and Android versions, sold as a one-time purchase rather than a subscription. Worth knowing before you buy: the desktop and mobile versions are separate products, so a license doesn't carry across platforms (Roni Music).

Slowing tempo down alongside tab, not just audio: Songsterr, mainly known as a tab site, has a paid tier (Songsterr Plus) that adds pitch-preserving speed control synced to the tab while you play along (Songsterr Plus).

Pulling one instrument out of a full mix — muting the drums to isolate the guitar part, or dropping everything but the bass: that needs stem separation, not just speed control. Moises does this with an AI-based splitter plus its own pitch-preserving speed changer; there's a limited free tier, with a paid subscription for unlimited use (Moises). Worth knowing: stem separation runs on their servers, so the file gets uploaded — a fair thing to check for if what you're splitting is something private, like a teacher's lesson recording.

How far to slow it down

There's no single "correct" percentage — it depends on how far the passage is from something you can already play. But a starting point that works for most people:

  • If it's genuinely too fast for your hands right now: start around 50-60% of the actual tempo.
  • If you can already play the notes but fumble the timing: start around 70-75%.

From there, the ideal is to move up in steps of roughly 10 percentage points — 60, then 70, then 80, and so on — with your last checkpoint before full speed sitting around 90%, not 100%. The rule for moving up: play the passage cleanly, start to finish, three times in a row before you bump the speed. If you miss it twice at a given speed, drop back down one step rather than grinding at a speed that's clearly still too fast — that's the single biggest time-waster in slow-practice, because "I've almost got it" is exactly the thought that keeps people stuck. (Same rule, same reasoning, as the tempo-climbing method in Metronome vs. Drum Beat — three clean reps before you move up, not two.)

One catch if you're doing this inside YouTube itself: YouTube's own speed control only has a few fixed steps — 0.25x, 0.5x, 0.75x, and 1x. So on an actual YouTube video, your only usable stops between "too slow" and full speed are roughly 50%, 75%, and 100% — there's no 60% or 80% to pick. That's still a workable plan (get clean at 50%, then 75%, then 100%), just a coarser, three-step version of the 10-point staircase below. To get the finer steps, you need a tool that controls speed on the audio itself rather than through YouTube's four presets.

As an example of the fine-grained version: say the actual song is around 140 BPM and there's a run of notes in it you can't get near. You'd start looping that section at roughly 70-84 BPM (50-60%), get three clean passes, move to about 98 BPM (70%), then 112 (80%), and finally sit at around 126 BPM (90%) for a session or two before testing it at the real 140. Written out like that it looks like a lot of steps — in practice it's usually one or two practice sessions, not one per step, since you'll often clear two steps in a single sitting once the shape of the passage is familiar.

Fix: Don't jump straight from "too hard to play" to 100%. On a fine-grained tool, work up in 10-point steps; on YouTube itself, treat 50% → 75% → 100% as your three stops. Either way, require three clean passes before each step up.

Loop the hard bars, not the whole song

If the hard part is four bars in the middle of a three-minute song, don't slow-play the whole thing to get more reps on those four bars — you'll spend most of your practice time on the parts you've already got. Set a loop that starts and ends right around the hard section, and repeat just that.

Two things make this work better:

Include a bar of buffer on each side of the hard part, not just the exact notes that trip you up. A passage that's clean in isolation can still fall apart when you're arriving into it from whatever comes right before — you never actually practiced that transition if your loop starts exactly on beat one of the hard bar.

Set the loop once and leave it, rather than manually dragging the video back every time it ends. Rewinding by hand breaks your focus and eats into practice time — by the time you've found the right spot again, you've lost the rhythm you were building.

Clean at half speed, sloppy at full speed

This is the part that confuses people the most: you can play a passage perfectly at 60%, then speed it up and it completely falls apart — not just "a bit rushed," but actually wrong notes, actually different fingering mistakes. That's not you being lazy. Slow motion and full-speed motion are genuinely different physical actions. At a slow tempo your hand has time to correct itself mid-motion; at full tempo it doesn't, so it needs to already know the shape of the movement in advance.

Two fixes for this:

  1. Three clean passes is the signal to move, not a reason to stay. Once you've hit that bar (see above), bump the speed rather than stacking another twenty reps at the same tempo — extra slow reps mostly train "slow," which isn't the skill you actually need.
  2. Take short bursts at full speed early, even before you're ready for the whole passage. Play just the first beat or two at 100% speed, then go back to your working tempo. This gives your hand a preview of what the fast motion actually feels like, instead of saving that discovery for the very end.

Playing by ear vs. following tab

Slow-down is useful for both, but for different reasons, and it changes how you should use it.

If you're figuring out the part by ear (no tab, no sheet music — just the recording), slow-down is mainly there so you can hear what's happening. Loop a short phrase, slow it down until you can pick out each note or chord change, and only then start trying to play it. Trying to learn the notes and the finger motion at the same time makes both harder.

If you already have tab or sheet music, you already know what to play — slow-down is purely about training your hands to execute it. Skip the note-hunting step and go straight to looping the specific bars that are physically hard, using the step-up method above.

What's fine with a YouTube lesson video, and what isn't

A lot of the songs and lessons people want to slow down live on YouTube, so it's worth being precise about the line here.

Fine: playing a video through YouTube's own embedded player and using playback controls — speed, looping a section, pausing, rewinding — while the video keeps streaming from YouTube. That's just using the player the way it's meant to be used.

Not fine: downloading the video or extracting its audio track to feed into some other slow-down tool. YouTube's Terms of Service state that content may not be downloaded unless YouTube itself shows a "download" link for it, and separately prohibit circumventing any feature that restricts copying (YouTube Terms of Service). Browser extensions and "YouTube to MP3" sites that rip audio are exactly the kind of workaround that clause is written to cover — using one puts you outside the terms, regardless of the intent being practice rather than piracy.

The practical takeaway: any app or workflow that helps you slow down a YouTube video should be doing it live, inside the official embedded player — not by grabbing a copy of the file first. Downloading the video or pulling its audio out to feed into a separate tool is exactly what those terms are written to prevent, regardless of how good the intention behind it is.
